About Matthew B. Roberts

A trial lawyer who only works for tenants

Matthew B. Roberts has built a career in the courtroom. Since 2011, he has served as litigation counsel, including at trial and on appeal, for a wide range of clients across California. He began his career representing insurance carriers and their policyholders in coverage and bad faith actions, as well as wrongful death, catastrophic injury, and property loss cases.

In 2019 he transitioned to the plaintiff bar, where he prosecuted consumer mass litigation against Fortune-500 manufacturers. In early 2022, he formed the Law Office of Matthew B. Roberts, with a deliberate focus on tenant rights litigation, including wrongful eviction, habitability claims, and tenant harassment.

Today the practice is built around one principle: he represents tenants only. No landlord-side work. No conflict. He also accepts trial and appellate referrals from other plaintiff attorneys in cases that need experienced courtroom counsel.

Licensed and in good standing to practice before all state and federal courts, including all appellate courts, in California.

Why only tenants

Most tenant lawyers take both sides. They represent landlords this quarter and tenants the next. Matthew Roberts decided early on that a conflict-free practice is a better practice. If you only represent tenants, you never have to wonder whose side you're on.

The Law Office of Matthew B. Roberts does not take landlord-side cases, does not handle property management work, and does not represent anyone who has ever evicted a tenant. The practice exists to hold California landlords accountable when they break the law, and that only works if there is never a conflict.

No landlord-side work. No conflict. Just tenant litigation.
